What does it mean to grow up? To approach adulthood yet still feel like a child. To be strong, yet still young. To be courageous, yet still have fears. To be maturing, but to not be quite "there yet." 21 is in many ways a milestone year, coming with it a new sense of responsibility and opportunity, and yet at the same time a loss of a sense of adolescence and recklessness. It's often an age anticipated all throughout your youth, but what does it mean to actually arrive at this point of expected maturity? And when do you truly cross the line from juvenile to adult? Or do you ever really?
This set of portraits is both an expression of the inner dialogue that comes with aging and a celebration of the 21 years of life this friend has collected, of all the ups and downs and setbacks and growth that made her who she is today.
Happy Birthday McKayla! You are a joy and a beam of positivity to everyone that meets you, and an absolute gem to work with.
We hope you all enjoy this project as much as we have!
